September 15th, Light & Health (Newark, NJ)
Our first meeting of the season brought us back to Don Pepe’s in Newark for not only a great meal, but also to discuss a terrific, pertinent, and timely topic. Dr. Joan Roberts, Ph.D. Professor of Chemistry at
On Tuesday evening, November 18th, our section meeting was on Airfield Lighting. We met at
Starting the evening with a “behind the scenes” tour of the airport which included a stop at the Continental Hanger (now there is a high bay application!), we continued with a full circle tour of the field from the inside. This provided as close a first hand examination of the lighting possible without stopping the arrival and departure of flights! Talk about being close!

1. How will this technology interact if interspersed with Standard incandescent lights? Is there a problem in the ratios between lighting systems?
2. How will this technology interact with present airport systems?
3. What are the impacts of intensity changes with LED’s?
4. Does the narrow spectral band of LED impact pilots with certain types of color deficient vision?
5. What is the impact of the reduced heat signature on the lens of LED fixtures with respect to lens contamination due to environmental conditions?
6. Can LEDs be seen on enhanced vision display?
7. Are current photometric tests for incandescent lights valid for LEDs?
And finally,
8. How is the operational failure of LED fixtures identified?
Although many of us may not be directly involved with airfield lighting, it is good to know that the work of Holly and her team helps increases the level of safety as we fly for business or pleasure.

On the evening of March 17th, the Montclair "NJ Section of the IES met at the Bloomfield Civic Center for our monthly meeting, "Taking the LEED". Three speakers presented different perspectives on this very current topic. Representing the USGBC was Gerard Hazel, from Sustainable Solutions, LLC, who provided a thorough presentation of LEED elements and the various LEED system ratings. Speaking from an architectural perspective was Christine Bruncati, who focused on how to bring LEED and architectural design to a unified direction of agreement. Wrapping up the evening was John Palomaki, Co-Founder of Greener Bloomfield, who passionately spoke about how he is turning his recently acquired home into the first LEED Platinum home in NJ. All in all, a most stimulating evening of differing perspectives and valuable information.
Standing room only! Well, not really, since we were able to add a few more chairs. Our meeting on Understanding Photometrics was such a success that we had a wait list to gain access. Thanks to Frank Locascio and the photometric space at Crescent Stonco for an in-depth look at the process of measuring through the final reports.
